Matthew 26:40 – Jesus went to pray in the garden of Gethsemane and he asked the disciples to watch with him. He went a short distance away to pray and they fell asleep. “Could you not stay awake with me one hour?” Jesus said to them.
He didn’t want to be alone. So human. You know the Gospels give us glimpses into his humanity, but only a few. We don’t really know what his sense of humor was like or what he hoped and feared. Jesus’ divinity is awesome, but his humanity is just as awesome.
Today is the last day of our 40 day challenge to Rediscover Jesus. IN the next few days find a empty church and sit with Jesus for an hour. Don’t place great plans or expectations on the hour, but just sit with him. Just be with Him in your silence.
It may be difficult, but relax. Draw back from the world. The author says “like atomic energy: a contraction that produces an expansion.” God wants you to live in his power.
Say this prayer during the hour:
“I am the son/daughter of a great king. He is my father and my God. The word may praise me or criticize me. It matters not. He is with me, always at my side, guiding and protecting me. I do not fear because I am his.”
Say it out loud, say it with pride. Post it on your wall or on your Facebook page. Look at it and be reminded each day. Amen.
I pray that each and everyone of us gets inspired by the power that lives in us, Holy Spirit.
God wants to fill you with Hope so you can see the possibilities.
There is one type of person everyone loves having on their team at work: the person that makes things happen. These are the people of possibility. We Christians should be the ultimate people of possibilities. I think you often find just the opposite. We are often people of impossibility. Any Suggestion that something new or different needs to be done and they often will says: “not enough money, too many others things going on, it will not work, people won’t come, we tried that before”….
We need to have our churches be palaces of possibility. We need to stop the negative thoughts and salves to the world and not like children of God. Every Christian who embraces the teaching of Jesus sets off an astounding domino effect of love of God and neighbor. As we talked before 2 billion Christians on this planet. How would the world be different if we simply behaved as Christians! Imagine the possibilities.
It is time to refocus on the essential invitation that is found in the Gospels. It is an invitation to complete joy delivered by Jesus Christ. It is time to rediscover Jesus.
Point to Ponder: Open your heart, mind and soul to the possibilities
Verse to Live by: “For God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26
Questions to Consider: Have you ever tried to live Christianity wholeheartedly?
Prayer: Lord, help me to see the possibilities.
Culture is something that is always attacking Christian values and questions everything we believe. It wants to put doubt in our mines. Even within some of our churches they teach that many things in the Bible are just illustrations. What if everything Jesus talks about in the Gospel is true?
What if we really do need to account for the life we have lived? Now I personally have no doubt that is is true. That they is heaven and hell, and joy in eternity with God.
God really wants us on the right side. God and life are always to be found in the now. Live each now passionately with God. God wants the best possible life for us.
We need to forget about yesterday, forget about all our yesterdays. We cannot change them, but we can live in the now and best serve God. The best way to live is one of life’s biggest questions, it is a question we must answer for ourselves.
For me and my life, I choose to go the radical Gospel of Jesus Christ way. They is still time – give yourself wholeheartedly to pursue a Gospel life.
Point to Ponder: The chances of it all being true are very high.
Verse to live by: Psalm 143:10
Question to consider: IF you were dying, would be paying more attention to your spiritual health when you are today? (We all are dying, just don’t know our appointed date yet).
Prayer: Father guide us, guide our words, thoughts and actions so we can live the best life and become the best version of ourselves. Amen.
A holy moment is a moment when we are being the person God created us to be, and if we are doing what we feel God is calling us to do. The author suggests net Monday = one holy; Tuesday = two; Wednesday = four and so on. There is no limit to the number of holy moments only your desire and consciousness to grasp each moment for God as it is unfolding.
Now to do this, we need God’s grace to create holy moments. God’s grace is never lacking, but rather our willingness to cooperate with his grace. Amen.
When you are looking for holy moments, there are all around us and everywhere. Actually every moment has a possible opportunity for holiness. Holiness is possible.
Point to Ponder: Holiness is possible for you.
Verse to Live by: “God’s will is for you to be holy.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3
Question to Consider or comment on: Before now, did you ever believe holiness was possible foryou?
Prayer: Lord, Never let us forget that holiness is possible.
Lies of the World suck Joy right out of us!!! The lie is that we cannot obtain Holiness – that it isn’t possible.
We as Christians do this to ourselves. We act like it isn’t actually possible. We believe that it was for past generations, but not us.
I went to a class reunion over the weekend. There was a great deal of joy and sorrow in the group, but believe me as a Christian. I was nervous to attend. I wanted to be Holy in God’s eyes, but part of me thought I would fall short. It is possible through the Holy Spirit to obtain joy and Holiness.
If only we surrender to God. Don’t let the world or distractions get to you.
Point to Ponder: You cannot get closer to God if you accept the lies of the world.
Proverbs 13:5 – “The righteous hate what is false.”
When did you stop believing holiness was possible for you?
Jesus we ask that you help us to overcome the lies of this world. Help us to tear down the barriers that separate us from you Lord. Remind us of our great destiny.
What is robbing you from Complete Joy. You and I both want it, we want a joy that is lasting and complete. I believe God wants to give us complete joy. Who or what is robbing us of joy? What’s standing in the way of that complete joy Jesus wants for us?
The next question is how hard are you willing to work for that joy? Are we all willing to sacrifice things to have that complete joy? Are we getting in the way of our own joy?
So many of us have tried short cuts, I know looking for love in all the wrong places, staying in bad marriages, drinking and partying hard to find joy. The truth is complete joy is found in the Gospel of Christ. The Gospel has a long track record and it has led many people to complete joy? So what do you have to do? I believe it is to embrace the Gospel. Little steps, and then bigger steps. Pay attention to the joy that increases in you. Pay attention to what really matters and what doesn’t. Pay attention to stress and anxiety.
The Gospel is an invitation to and a blueprint for the complete joy we all want.
Point to Ponder: Gratitude is a sure path to joy.
Question to Consider: What really brings you joy?
Jesus help us to get out of the way so you can fill us with complete joy.
Wow – I cannot believe we are at day 34 – Life is not about getting what you want.
Here are the two wrestling questions in our hearts: 1. What do I want? 2. What does God want?
Over time we discover that what we really want deep down inside is what God wants for us. Wisdom is the realization that it is insane to want something other than what God wants.
When we realize this – it will begin to be a daily quest to seek his will instead of our own.
Point to Ponder: The wrong questions always lead to the wrong answers.
Verse to Live – Romans 15:13
Question to consider: Does getting what you want bring you lasting happiness?
Prayer: Jesus please remind us that your will is what we really want deep down.
One of the greatest temptations in life is to get comfortable.
Do you like being comfortable? Yeah, me too!!! I left a job just to get a higher opportunity for jobs and experience, so I drove off to Washington DC, out of my comfort zone and left my husband to fend for himself. It was a difficult transition and then Don and I were content in DC for 2 years. When he came I set up for him to do a radio program on Sunday nights for Christian Radio. Then Don said, no – He said – you should do it! Well I took on the challenge. It was all difficult because it was new. I almost feel like I have challenged myself to not get too comfortable.
Why doesn’t Jesus want us to get comfortable? The reason is simple, profound, and practical: He doesn’t wants us to forget that we are just passing through this world. We are pilgrims. When we get comfortable we start to behave as if we are going to live on this earth forever – and we are not.
What does that mean? It means to be without God’s grace and the accountability of friendship and community. When we reject God’s grace and the accountability of friendship community, we become selfish. This selfishness manifests in a thousand different ways, but each of them is a turning on the self.
If you want to be a better Christian, we have to start denying ourselves.
Point to Ponder: Being too comfortable, too often, makes us weak in mind, body and spirit.
Verse to Live Matthew 16:24
Question to Consider: What is one way you can deny yourself today?
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for all the comforts of this world; help us to discern when things are good for us and when they are not.
It is easy to lay Christianity out in a logical and reasonable way. I have had so many people ask for a rule book, or even create their own rule book. Paul wrote about trying to live our lives like Jesus, “I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do? (Romans 7:19). This is the essential dilemma every Christian has to face.
What is the real reason the world is messed up? The real reason is “sin.” Sin is the real problem. The truth is sin, makes us unhappy. God never intended for us to suffer and die. He wanted for us to live in paradise forever. He wanted harmony between all of us, suffering and death are the direct result of sin.
Sin is missing the mark God intended us to make. The bull’s-eye, but we continue to miss it.
I use to work with a lady, who use to tell me – shake the devil off…Well she was pretty much saying what the author is saying. On days you are really struggling with sin, Pick yourself up dust yourself off and begin again. Amen
Ponder Sins makes you unhappy
Verse to live Psalm 51:12
What are your most frequent sin?
Lord have mercy on us and save us from our sins. Amen
God has a better way of doing things. Hands down… Scriptures teach us that God’s way are not man’s way. In Isaiah we read: “Your thoughts are not my thoughts, nor are your ways my ways declares the Lord” (Isaiah 55:8)
Jesus turns the world upside in the Beatitudes – 141 words – Sermon on the Mount.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. …. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…” Matthew 5:1-11
We have this world so messed up, because we focus on are distorted view, while God’s reality is so different. Forgiveness is at the center of God’s heart, it is at the center of Christianity.
Left to our own devices we are vengeful people. We are not naturally kind and merciful, slow to anger, rich in compassion.
Point to Ponder: God has a better way of doing things.
Verse to live: “The human mind may devise many plans, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will be established.” Proverbs 19:21
Question to consider: What is one practical example of how God is inviting you to let go of your way and open yourself to his way?
Prayer: Lord, teach us to value your way of doing things above all other ways. Amen.
